CLEARWATER, Fla. Aidan Miller, who grew up just 30 minutes from BayCare Ballpark, is eager to prove himself at his first Spring Training with the Phillies. Miller, now 20 years old, still lives at home, relishing the comfort of local food and the chance to share his experience with family and friends. Ranked as the No. 27 overall prospect in baseball and No. 1 in the Phillies organization by MLB Pipeline, Miller is the youngest player in camp. Hes excited to work alongside established stars like Bryce Harper, Zack Wheeler, Trea Turner, and Kyle Schwarber.
"I feel like half of this locker room are guys I grew up watching, " Miller said Tuesday morning. "Its surreal to be around them. I feel a bit starstruck, like a kid again."
Miller has earned this opportunity due to his impressive talent, and the Phillies have high hopes for his future.
"He could move quickly, " Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said last week. "Were seeing players like Painter, Aidan Miller, and Justin Crawford approach the next level, and its time for them to be exposed to the big league camp. Theyll soon be integrated with the Major League team."
Though its unlikely Miller will reach the Major Leagues in 2025, Dombrowski didnt rule out the possibility entirely. A more realistic target is the 2026 season. Last year, Miller made an impressive leap, advancing through three levelsSingle-A Clearwater, High-A Jersey Shore, and Double-A Reading. He finished the season with a.261 batting average, 11 home runs, 60 RBIs, and an.812 OPS Philadelphia Phillies Clothing, while showing his skills as a capable shortstop.
Miller has focused on consistency as a key area for growth. "I started strong last year, cooled off in the middle, then finished strong, " he said. "When things arent going well, I work to find what helps me get back to my best. The higher levels brought more challenges https://www.philliesplayerfanstore.com/kyle_schwarber_jersey-206, with pitchers attacking my weaknesses and throwing with more velocity."
Asked what he needs to improve to get to the big leagues sooner than expected, Miller said, "Everything. Im always trying to improve every part of my game. In the cages, I work to create tough environments for myself, whether thats with angled machines or live BP. I challenge myself to grow as a hitter."
Preston Mattingly, who previously led the Phillies' player development, was always impressed by Millers work ethic. "From day one, hes been on a mission to improve, " Mattingly said. "Hes focused on proving people wrong about where he was drafted and his ability to play shortstop. Hes consistently pushing us to help him get there faster. We have to pull back on him sometimes, but thats a good problem to have."
Millers drive is clear. After the 2024 season ended, he even wanted to continue working on his infield skills at the Carpenter Complex. "He's extremely driven, " Mattingly added.
Although the Phillies considered having Miller play different positions in the infield this spring, for now, hes focusing solely on shortstop. "It shows they believe in me there, " Miller said. However, hes open to any position if it helps him reach the big leagues faster.
Looking ahead, decisions will need to be made regarding the infield. Alec Bohm, the third baseman, could be traded, and his contract will expire after the 2026 season. While there have been discussions about moving Trea Turner to the outfield, the team has stated that its not being considered at this time.
Reflecting on Dombrowskis remarks about his potential to rise quickly to the big leagues, Miller shared, "Thats the goal. I want to make it to Philly as soon as possible and stay there. Im doing everything I can to make that happen."
